As you and your team return from vacation, remember that cybercriminals never take a break. Research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a surge in phishing attacks during the summer months. Here's how to stay vigilant and protect your business.
Why Is the Threat Increasing?
Cyber attackers exploit the summer travel season by mimicking hotel and Airbnb websites, according to Check Point Research. They've identified a 55% rise in new travel-related domain registrations in May 2025 compared to last year. Out of over 39,000 domains, 1 in 21 was flagged as suspicious or malicious.
Additionally, the back-to-school period triggers a spike in phishing emails impersonating legitimate university communications aimed at students and staff. Even if your industry isn't directly targeted, employees checking personal emails on work devices could inadvertently expose your business to cyber threats with a single click.
How to Defend Against These Threats
While AI enhances cybersecurity, it also enables more convincing phishing scams. Training yourself and your team to recognize warning signs is crucial to avoid falling victim.
Top Safety Tips to Prevent Cyber Attacks:
· Watch for suspicious emails. Don't rely solely on spotting spelling errors or awkward phrasing—AI can craft flawless messages. Verify sender addresses and scrutinize visible links for authenticity.
· Verify URLs carefully. Look out for misspellings or unusual domain extensions like .today or .info, which are common in scam sites.
· Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links in emails or messages, type the website address yourself to ensure safety.
· Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of security, protecting your login credentials and sensitive data even if a breach occurs.
· Use caution with public WiFi. When accessing sensitive information on public networks, always use a VPN to secure your connection.
· Avoid personal email on company devices. Keep personal accounts separate and use personal devices for personal communications to reduce risk.
· Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices, block phishing attempts, and alert your MSP instantly if a breach occurs, minimizing data exposure.
Phishing threats are evolving rapidly, fueled by AI advancements. The best defense is a well-informed team aware of the latest risks. Stay educated, stay protected!
